A CVOR (Commercial Vehicle Operator’s Registration) is a mandatory registration with Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation that monitors the safety performance of commercial vehicle operators. It tracks collisions, inspections, convictions, and audits to ensure road safety. You need a CVOR if you operate trucks over 4,500 kg, any tow truck, or buses carrying 10+ passengers, with limited personal-use exemptions. Holding a CVOR means you’re responsible for driver conduct, vehicle maintenance, inspections, and record keeping. Non-compliance can lead to fines, audits, impoundment, and poor safety ratings, while proper compliance protects your business and credibility. Learn more about this here
In Ontario, the Registered Operator Name must be displayed on both sides of the commercial vehicle with a minimum character height of 75 mm (3 inches), although 100 mm (4 inches) is recommended for better highway visibility. While the CVOR number is legally required only on the certificate inside the cab, industry best practice places it alongside the name using bold, high-contrast, sans-serif fonts like Arial or Helvetica to facilitate quick identification by enforcement officers.
